The writer very clearly tries to capture the boyhood in a different perspectives. It revolves around the childhood adventures of the main character Swaminathan and his group of friends. The conflict that arises throughout the book between Swami and his friends are problems that almost every children faces today. R.K.Narayan specifically uses childhood as the medium to show the dual nature of human beings and how the good and the bad qualities are inbuilt in each of us by default since our childhood. The conflict of right and wrong has always been there since the birth of a being.

Towards the beginning of the book, Swami and his four original friends do a great job of seeing the positives of their differences, but struggle to see the good in Rajam. The whole conflict of good and bad starts right from the childhood as soon as he begins understanding the things happening around. And it is also very vital to show young readers the value of making new friends and adjusting to changes that may occur among the friends we already have. The book ends creating an atmosphere of suspense among the readers. I highly recommend this book particularly for child between the ages 7 and 15, which will help them to understand and mould their multiple nature in a better way.
