Great Expectations || Charles Dickens || Book Review

Great Expectations

"Great Expectations" is one of the classic novel, written by Charles Dickens in the year 1816. The story is of an orphan named Pip. The characters are thoroughly original, how symbolism is rich and yet timeless. I can re-read this novel countless times. The thrill experience that Dickens portraits in this book is really very amazing, the plot twists and cry at unselfish goodness in Pip's heart. The terrific situation with Miss Havisham in her crumbling mansion where all the clocks have stopped at the moment of her wedding that never materialized and decay and waste. The romantic situation between Estella and Pip is so unusual gives the novel something Dickens had never played with prior. The novel depicts the undying love and complex human relationships.

Great Expectations
From the beginning of the novel Pip is not an ideal protagonist who have to be emotionally or physically strong. The story in one line is about a person and his 'great expectations.' As a young boy Pip, lives with his sister and her husband, of whom he is fond of in his childhood. One day his presence is at demand infront of a strange woman who lives in a grand house with her adopted daughter, Estella. This is the beginning of Pip's 'great expectations.' The contrast between Estella and Pip and her cruelty towards him is really heart breaking, still he can't help but falling in love with her. Miss Havisham raised Estella to break many hearts and had trained to take revenge on the male sex. The most beautiful scenario is when Pip's love saves Estella from becoming a recluse like Miss Havisham.
